The guest room stood apart from the family's own quarters — an architecture that encoded an obligation.
In the old settlements the haçeş was built first and kept ready, whether or not anyone was expected. A guest was owed shelter without being asked who they were or how long they would stay.
Almost none of these buildings survive in Jordan. The obligation did.
